Vegvisir Unveils Battlefield Communications Module and Expands to Air, Maritime and Underwater Domains

Estonian defence technology company Vegvisir will unveil two major product developments at Eurosatory 2026. The company is launching a Communications Module that enables military platforms to automatically switch between available communication networks to maintain connectivity in contested environments. It is also expanding its situational awareness and command platform beyond land operations to support air, maritime and underwater systems.

According to Vegvisir’s CEO Ingvar Pärnamäe, one of the key lessons from the war in Ukraine has been that battlefield communications can no longer rely on a single network or technology. Great battlefield innovations often fail to reach their full potential because operators struggle with fragmented or unreliable connectivity solutions.

“While Vegvisir initially focused on helping operators and commanders visualise and manage manned and unmanned assets in real time, customers repeatedly highlighted this challenge. We kept hearing the same thing: Vegvisir is great, but we also need a reliable way to connect our platforms. The Communications Module was born directly from that demand," said Pärnamäe.

Vegvisir’s Communications Module automatically manages and prioritises multiple communication channels, including 5G, 4G, Starlink, MANET MESH radios and even fiber optical solutions. If a preferred network becomes unavailable, the system seamlessly switches to alternative connections without operator intervention, helping maintain communications in contested and degraded environments.

The system uses dual modems with failover capability to other LAN and WAN links running all in parallel, including fiber optics. The system also features integrated omnidirectional antennas requiring no external installation, rugged IP68-rated protection for harsh environments, and compatibility with fibre-optic communications for electronic warfare-resistant, RF-silent operations.

The solution has already secured its first customer in Europe.

Situational Awareness Across Multiple Domains

Vegvisir's second major development expands the company's situational awareness and command platform beyond land operations. Originally developed to support manned and unmanned ground systems, the platform can now be integrated with air, maritime and underwater assets, giving operators and commanders a unified view across multiple domains.

"As armed forces adopt growing numbers of drones, unmanned ground vehicles and autonomous maritime systems, one of the biggest challenges is making manned and unmanned assets work together effectively. Through Vegvisir's enhanced Virtual Command Station, commanders can access live feeds, maps and mission data from multiple platforms within a single operational environment. This improves manned-unmanned teaming, reduces the manpower required to operate autonomous systems and gives commanders a clearer understanding of where assets are, what they see and how they contribute to the mission," said Ingvar Pärnamäe.

The Vegvisir ecosystem

The new capabilities form part of Vegvisir's wider vision for the future battlefield. The company's CORE solution gives crews of manned vehicles a mixed-reality "see-through-armour" capability, while NANO brings advanced situational awareness to unmanned platforms and FPV operations. Both can be integrated into Vegvisir's Virtual Command Station, where commanders manage multiple assets through a common operational environment using Vegvisir's proprietary Visor headset and Mission Grip controller.

By combining low-latency video feeds, sensor data and mission information into a unified operational picture, the platform helps operators and commanders make faster decisions in complex and rapidly changing situations.

Vegvisir's largest customer to date is the Australian Army, which uses the company's technology in its experimentation with optionally manned and unmanned M113 armoured vehicles. The company's solutions are also being tested or deployed in nine countries, including Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Belgium, Norway, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and the United States. Vegvisir is also pursuing opportunities to validate its technology in Ukraine, where the rapid adoption of unmanned systems continues to shape the future of warfare.
